The Perfect Cuppa

I couldn’t think of a better way to start this blog off than with instructions on making the perfect cup of tea. But when I started to think about the process, I realized that there is no unique ceremony to tea making for me. I started to question my tea knowledge and decided to investigating the matter further. In my research, I found that there are many, many opinions on this. We all have our own brew and method; and some of us are utter experts, it seems!

Among the standard “pour boiled water over tea bag, add sugar and milk” type lessons, I also came across several, more complicated instructions:

  • George Orwell’s tea method contains 11 exhausting steps! In The Collected Essays, Journalism and Letters of George Orwell, Volume 3, he states that “one should take the teapot to the kettle and not the other way about. The water should be actually boiling at the moment of impact, which means that one should keep it on the flame while one pours”. I don’t know about George, but I like my tea to be relaxing … sans 3rd degree steam burns and complicated “kettle pouring pully systems”.
  • Many of the tea manuals I came across stressed the importance of using only loose teas. I can appreciate a good loose tea, but I have been a tea bag girl my whole life and haven’t suffered for it. Tea snobs beware! Us teabags are here to stay.
  • There are a ton of online videos on tea prep! Loose vs. Whole Leaf Tea, Tea Brewing Equipment, Evaluating Tea Quality, Tips for Buying & Storing Your Tea; and on it goes. I don’t know how these people have time to DRINK the bloody tea!

In the end, I have come to discover that the ceremony of making your cuppa tea does not matter. Its how you enjoy it once its made. Mug or cup and saucer, brewed or steeped, it is still my #1 comfort drink; bag and all.
